5 Common Ways Your Rolex Gets Stolen

Every now and then Watch Chest will get a call with a heartbroken client on the other end: their Rolex was stolen. Thankfully most register their timepiece with the homeowner’s insurance agency (one of the FIRST things you should do when you make your purchase!) but it’s still disappointing to feel taken advantage of. Here are 5 of the most common situations we’ve found for a luxury timepiece to get stolen:

1. Wrong Place, Wrong Time

Although this reason is the most general and mostly out of your control, there are a few things we can do to avoid unwelcome situations. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time can be anything from a certain side of town to walking in a restaurant parking lot. While we should never be controlled by fear in regards to wearing jewelry (that’s what insurance is for), the point is to be more aware and mindful as you go about your daily life. If you know you are going to be in a certain area or walking downtown at night after an event, think of ways to not attract attention. I know of people who make sure to conceal their timepiece when they feel uncomfortable or even leave it home for an evening depending on the situation.

2. Locker Rooms

While a gym or spa can have such a wonderful feeling of community it is still a way for trust to be taken advantage of. One of the safest routes for any luxury watch owner in this type of situation is to always wear your timepiece but otherwise take the time to double check and make sure your locker is secure.

3. Contractors/Employees In Your Home

A common occurrence for a stolen luxury timepiece is when a contractor or employee has access to the inside of your home, such as a construction company, for example. Of course this is referring to the few bad eggs but unfortunately is can happen, especially if they are working while you are not home. Simply make sure to lock up your valuables or that you wear your timepiece. Avoid accidentally leaving it on the dresser while in a rush to work that morning!

4. Guests

I had a friend tell me a story once about a dinner party he had where a few of his guests brought dates he had never met. He had a Rolex Explorer I on his dresser and believes that one of these randoms had stolen it while on a bathroom break. Even though he paid no mind to the safety of his timepiece that night while he was among friends, you are not always aware of the intention or lack of self control of those you share your space with. This can apply to your home, your handbag, and even your hotel room as you travel. Either lock up or wear your timepiece, that way you know where it is at all times.

5. Selling Your Timepiece Scam

Unfortunately, the most common way to have your luxury timepiece stolen is through a scam. In an effort to make the most money from the sale, owners will sell the watch online through a site like eBay but not realize that they are a huge target. For instance, fake PayPal accounts are set up or scammers can easily deceive a real “customer” of theirs, where the customer pays you thinking they are paying the scammer but doesn’t receive the promised product from them, all the while you send your sold timepiece to the scammer. There are many other types of scams so please be careful! To avoid this, I highly recommend selling or trading in with a reputable company, such as Watch Chest.

Conclusion

The 5 most common ways for your luxury timepiece to get stolen are usually avoidable! Stay aware and always lock up your valuables when you aren’t wearing them. Please tell your story or leave any tips in the comments below!
